UNIONDALE, NEW YORK (June 12, 2024)—The Uniondale School District recently announced the outstanding accomplishments of its instrumental music groups at the prestigious New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Majors Festivals. These accolades highlight the dedication and talent of Uniondale scholars and their directors, who have worked tirelessly to achieve musical excellence.
"These awards are testament to the incredible talent and hard work of our students, as well as the exceptional guidance of our music directors,” said Superintendent Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. “We are proud of the distinction they bring to our District and their exemplary representation of Uniondale’s commitment to excellence in the arts."
The Turtle Hook String Orchestra, under the direction of Cynthia McGinnis, earned “Gold with Distinction,” the highest possible rating. This honor is awarded to groups that demonstrate an exceptional level of technical and artistic skill, surpassing the stringent standards set by NYSSMA adjudicators. The Lawrence Road Band, directed by Marc John Delosso, received a "Gold" rating, a distinction signifying a performance of excellent quality with minor technical or musical issues. The Uniondale High School (UHS) Select Strings Orchestra, led by Sapphire Aupont, also earned a "Gold" rating, reflecting their high level of musicianship and precision. The Uniondale High School’s Knight Time Jazz Band and Concert Band, both under the direction of Colton Wynter and Joe Boardman, have achieved “Gold With Distinction” ratings at their NYSSMA adjudication at Adelphi University.
“I’m so proud of our scholars,” said Kelvin Jenkins, Director of Fine and Performing Arts. “Receiving ‘Gold with Distinction’ just proves how dedicated, strong and talented each scholar in our orchestra is. I hope these young talents continue to grow with the same passion they show up with every day to practice.”
The NYSSMA Majors Festivals are renowned adjudication events where school ensembles perform in front of experienced adjudicators. Ensembles are evaluated on various criteria, including tone quality, intonation, rhythm, dynamics, and interpretation. Schools participate by registering their ensembles and preparing a program that meets the specific requirements outlined in the NYSSMA manual. Performances are graded on a scale, with "Gold with Distinction" representing the pinnacle of achievement.
